How to Clean Pet Turf, and Stop the Smell

Water alone does not remove urine. Here is the routine that does, and the base fix for runs that already smell.

To clean pet turf, pick up solids daily, rinse weekly, and once a month apply a turf enzyme cleaner to relief zones and rinse it through. Keep zeolite infill at depth so it captures ammonia between cleanings. If the smell returns within days of a cleaning, the urine is being held under the turf by a weed barrier or a base with fines, and the fix is under the turf, not on it.

Why pet turf smells, and why water alone does not fix it

Urine is mostly water, urea and salts. The water drains through the backing; the urea and salts stay behind in the infill and on the backing, where bacteria convert them to ammonia. Every time the turf gets wet, the smell comes back. Hosing moves some of it down into the base, but on a base with fines or a weed barrier under the turf, it stops there and stays. So the routine has three parts: break the crystals down chemically, capture the ammonia in the infill, and give it somewhere to drain.

The monthly pet turf cleaning routine

  1. Pick up solids daily, the same as a lawn. Rinse the spot.
  2. Rinse the whole area weekly with a hose, working toward the drainage fall.
  3. Apply an enzyme cleaner monthly to relief zones. Turf-specific enzyme products break urea down; general household cleaners and vinegar mask it. Follow the dwell time on the label, then rinse through.
  4. Brush against the grain after it dries so the pile stands up and the infill settles.
  5. Check the zeolite twice a year. Zeolite infill captures ammonia in its structure and releases it into the ground when rinsed; it does the work between cleanings, and it needs to stay at depth.

A run that already smells

If a monthly enzyme treatment does not hold for more than a few days, the problem is under the turf, not on it. The three usual causes, in order: a weed barrier laid directly under the turf (it holds urine like a sponge), a base with fines instead of washed stone, and no drainage fall so liquid sits. The fix for the first is to pull the turf and remove the fabric. The fix for the other two is a base rebuild with 2 to 4 inches of washed crushed stone on a 1 to 2 percent fall, described in the sub base guide. Kennels and daycares with heavy use add a drainage grid under the turf so urine flushes through when rinsed.

Commercial pet facilities run this monthly and the light routine weekly. The turf that holds up is a short, dense pile on a PU backing with high drainage; the best pet turf guide covers what to check on the spec sheet, and Elite Pet 80 is the line we stock for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you clean dog urine off artificial grass?

Rinse the spot, apply a turf enzyme cleaner and let it dwell, then rinse through. Do relief zones monthly. Enzymes break down the urea crystals that cause the smell; water and vinegar only mask it.

What infill is best for dogs?

Zeolite. It is a porous mineral that captures ammonia and releases it into the ground when rinsed, so the turf stays neutral between cleanings. Use it in place of, or on top of, silica sand in relief areas.

Can you use bleach on pet turf?

No. Bleach and other chlorine products break down the polyurethane backing and the fiber coating, and damage from them is excluded from turf warranties. Use a turf-safe disinfectant.

Why does my artificial grass smell after rain?

Dried urine salts in the infill or base rehydrate and release ammonia. If enzyme cleaning does not hold, the base is holding urine: usually a weed barrier under the turf or a base with fines. Both are fixed under the turf, not on top of it.
