Lifespan

How Long Does Artificial Grass Last?

Fifteen to twenty years on a lawn is the honest number. Here is what moves it up or down, and how a warranty term relates to it.

Artificial grass lasts 15 to 20 years on a residential lawn with a compacted base, infill kept at depth, and a monthly brush. Busy backyards with dogs run 12 to 18 years, playgrounds 8 to 12, and sports fields 8 to 10. UV, foot traffic and backing failure are what end it, in that order, and the first two are slowed by the maintenance routine. A warranty term is not a lifespan; the Mighty Turf 16-year warranty covers defects and fading, and a well-built lawn outlives it.

Lifespan by use

Where it is installedTypical service lifeWhat ends it
Front lawn, light traffic15 to 20 yearsUV fade and fiber embrittlement, long after the warranty
Backyard with kids and dogs12 to 18 yearsPile wear in traffic lanes and relief zones
Commercial landscape, HOA common area12 to 15 yearsFoot traffic and maintenance skipped by rotating vendors
Putting green10 to 15 yearsNylon or PE putting surface slows as fibers wear; fringe outlasts it
Playground8 to 12 yearsConcentrated wear under swings and slides; shock pad often outlasts the turf
Sports field8 to 10 yearsCleat wear and infill compaction; fields are replaced on a schedule

Those ranges assume a compacted base, infill kept at depth, and the maintenance routine on the care guide. Skip the base and the number is the first wet winter; skip the infill and blades lie over and wear from the side within a few years.

What actually wears out

Three things, in order. UV breaks down polyethylene over time; the fiber gets brittle and the color shifts. UV stabilizers in the yarn set the clock, which is why the warranty covers fading and degradation for a fixed term. Traffic crushes and abrades the pile; higher face weight and a denser stitch rate put more fiber in the way. Backing failure, fibers pulling out and seams opening, comes from latex coatings drying out in heat or from water sitting under the turf; a polyurethane backing on a drained base avoids both, which is the argument for the backing spec.

Reading the warranty against the lifespan

A warranty term is not a lifespan, and the two are easy to confuse on a sales sheet. Most landscape warranties run 8 to 15 years, prorate after a few years, exclude commercial and pet use, and void on DIY installs. The Mighty Turf 16-year limited warranty is 8 years of manufacturer coverage plus an 8-year Mighty Turf residual against manufacturing defects, UV degradation and excessive fading, and a DIY install does not void it. The brand-by-brand comparison lays out what each major brand actually covers, including the Arizona heat carve-outs that shorten some competitors to 3 years.

How to get the long end of the range

  • Build the base to spec and compact it. Most early failures are base failures.
  • Keep infill at a third of the pile height. It shields the backing from UV and holds blades upright.
  • Brush traffic lanes monthly so pile wears from the top, not the side.
  • Shade or screen low-E windows that reflect onto the turf.
  • Pick the line for the job: 80 to 100 ounce face weight for traffic, a pet line for dogs, a putting surface for greens. The spec sheets list face weight, pile height and backing for every line we stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does artificial grass last?

15 to 20 years on a residential lawn with a compacted base and basic maintenance. Heavier use shortens it: 12 to 18 years for busy backyards, 8 to 12 for playgrounds, 8 to 10 for sports fields.

Does artificial grass fade?

All polyethylene turf shifts color slowly under UV. Quality yarn with UV stabilizers holds color for well over a decade, and excessive fading is a covered defect under the Mighty Turf 16-year warranty.

Is a 16-year warranty the same as a 16-year lifespan?

No. The warranty covers manufacturing defects, UV degradation and excessive fading for the term. Lifespan depends on base, traffic and maintenance, and a well-installed lawn usually outlives its warranty.

What shortens the life of artificial turf the most?

A base that was not compacted, followed by infill that was never topped up. Both let the turf move and the blades lie over, and both are avoidable.
